The Project

SMiLE (Small and Medium Industries Leveraging Experiential Tourism) is an initiative of BRDC for promoting and facilitating tourism based small & medium entrepreneurial ventures in North Malabar. It has thrust on ‘experiential tourism’, given emphasis on unique, new experiences rather than providing a place to stay, relax and see places. Culture, myth, lifestyle, local cuisines etc. are greatly valued in the process.

SMiLE envisages economic upliftment and employment generation in the community and also have stress on preservation of environment and culture in tourism development.

Ventures such as Budget Resorts, Homestays, Farm Tourism, Ayurveda centres, Houseboats, Handicrafts and Souvenir Industry, Indigenous Art/Culture Centre (Kalari, Yoga, classical dance etc.) are encouraged.

SMiLE extends assistance to entrepreneurs through orientation workshops, sensitization programs, facilitating product development/differentiation, developing linkages between entrepreneurs and market players, supporting entrepreneurs with marketing efforts etc.

SMiLE registration is open to aspiring entrepreneurs from all districts, but invariably those who plan to start tourism ventures in North Malabar region, Kasaragod and Kannur districts and Vatakara taluk in Kozhikode district.

Entrepreneurs from three categories such as those who wish to start a new tourism venture, diversification of existing one into a tourism venture and existing tourism unit but loss making can apply.

Interested entrepreneurs are to register online at www.bekaltourism.com/registration. Based on preliminary assessment, the registrant will get opportunity to take part in orientation workshop or individual consultancy session.

The participants of the orientation workshop/ consuntancy session who show progress in the process of planning and setting up the venture will get opportunities to take part in the follow-up workshops and support services in marketing.

Subsidies or financial grants are not offered to entrepreneurs, as part of the project.
